This special festival, created by the Pt Lincoln City Band was a wonderful success on the June long weekend.
sat workshop 1

SABA president Kevin Cameron visited and worked with music students from St Josephs Primary School, Pt Lincoln High & Poonindie Primary School during the week. Several of them joined in the whole day workshop on the Saturday; a huge effort by Kevin and the musicians of all ages & stages. DECS Instrumental Music Service teachers Nick Vladkoff & Anna Lester based in Pt Lincoln, generously attended and supported the students, along with SABA committee member Sonia Radford (also DECS IMS teacher)

The final rehearsal went smoothly on the Sunday; and the keen audience of about 100 were thrilled at the stunning performance by their local community band and featured musicians. All credit to the hard working committee & families of the band for the workshops, the fun quiz night, the food/ accommodation etc. Outstanding sponsorship for local businesses made the whole weekend even better.

The band rehearses on a Monday evening, upstairs in the Nautilus Theatre

Hahndorf Band Festival 2008

In the blaze of mid-morning sun, five of our bands assembled at the Eastern end of the town centre for the annual Hahndorf Festival Street March. Salisbury stepped off smartly to be followed by K & N Spring Gully, Enfield, Mitcham and the host, Hahndorf, bringing up the rear.

To each of these bands, congratulations are due for the promptness with which they assembled ready for step off under rather trying circumstances and our thanks are extended to the two very efficient traffic controllers from the Mt Barker Council who diverted traffic for the duration of each band’s march. And each of our bands provided a great spectacle and a fine listening experience as they traversed the five or six minutes of the march.

Under the watchful eye of adjudicator, David Gardiner, Musical Director of the Tea Tree Gully Redbacks and Principle Trombone of the Band of the SA Police, K & N took out the prize for best on the march, followed by Salisbury in 2nd place and the host band in 3rd. For their trouble K & N picked up a cash prize of $250, generously donated by the Mt Barker Council; not bad for 5 minutes work!

The afternoon was pleasantly occupied with the entertainment concert held in the Hahndorf Institute (Have you ever played on a smaller stage?) Quite a good crowd attended throughout the afternoon enjoying a diverse program of excellent music. Bruce Raymond will, no doubt, remember his entry for some time to come; those in the audience certainly will.

At the end of a most enjoyable afternoon’s music, our Adjudicator retired to face the difficulty of awarding points for each performance, and during this lull in activities, our President, Dr Kevin Cameron, had the pleasant task of presenting an NBCA 25 Year Service Award and SABA Life Membership to an absolutely astounded David Moss of Enfield. David was both gracious and humble in his response.

The points awarded for the contest, after handicap adjustment, were very close, but again K & N took the day, ahead of Mitcham with Hahndorf again in 3rd place. Congratulations to K & N Spring Gully for a very successful, and profitable, afternoon. In addition to the cash prize of $250, they took home two shields, donated by SABA as perpetual trophies for the street march and the entertainment program, together with an individual trophy for each which will reside permanently in their trophy cabinet.

On behalf of our President, Committee and Members of SABA, our congratulations to all participants for the day’s entertainment, and to our hosts, the Hahndorf Town Band for their organizing efforts. Just being there made one proud to be part of such a great organisation as ours.

Hahndorf Town Band - 2

   MUSIKFEST

The 40 year old tradition of Hahndorf Town Band's Musikfest was well served last Saturday night. Adelaide legendary stage star Phyl Skinner was a marvellous MC and she enjoyed the music and singing as much as anyone there. Guest conductor Steve Miller, prepared the band over the last month and even joined in the trombone ensemble playing "Trombola". The popular bracket of swing included Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Tuxedo Junction, One O'clock jump and Take the A Train. A wonderful night of talent, music, singing, prizes, food and fun.

NEWS RELEASE Thursday 20 March

2008 SABA COMPETITIONS

The SA Band Association is pleased to announce adjudicators for its 2008 events.

The Hahndorf Band Festival features a street march and entertainment contest for up to 5 brass bands. The adjudicator for 2008 will be Mr David Gardiner, Principal Trombone of the Band of the South Australia Police and Musical Director of the Tea Tree Gully Redbacks.

The SA State Solo Championships will be held at Pembroke School on the 14-15 June. Adjudicator for the Senior competition will be Mr David Polain, Musical Director of the Tanunda Town Band. Mr Mark C. Smith, Conductor of the SA Police Rangers Band, will preside over the Junior competition.

For the State Championships on Saturday 16 August two adjudicators will be entrusted with the crucial decision-making in all brass and concert grades. Mr Peter Walmsley OAM and Mr Colin Archibald will be in the box.

There will be a number of important changes to the 2008 SABA Band Championships and the 2008 Solo Championships:

The State Championships will be held at Elder Hall. This is a wonderful professional venue that will present bands in the best possible light, whilst being in a central location for bands and audience members alike.

  • Bands will play a programme of three works for the Championship in each grade. The Major Work, appropriate for grade, will be Own Choice.
  • Brass and Concert bands will contest the Championships on the same day. The A Grade Brass and A Grade Concert sections will be presented as an evening Gala Concert occasion
  • Rules and sections for the Solo Championships have been completely revised.
  • The Solo Championships will include ensemble sections – duets, trios, quartets, and quintets in both the Junior and Senior Championships.
  • There will be a special Band Aggregate Prize across the Solo and Ensemble Championships, based on participation and places awarded. This has been introduced as an additional incentive for our members to develop confidence and performance skills outside the band setting.

The State Band Championships and the State Solo Championships are very important events on the banding calendar in South Australia. I am looking forward to seeing our bands take every opportunity to enhance the standard and profile of live community music in this state. I am also hoping that we will welcome friends and colleagues from interstate to our 2008 championships, said SABA President Kevin Cameron.
