Passing of Mr Ken McMahon

| The South Australian Band Association is saddened to learn of the passing of one of the true South Australian Music Legends. Kenneth Percival George McMahon has left an incredible legacy. It is difficult to find words to describe this man’s contribution to the Banding world. In his early thirties Ken made the transition from footballer to trombonist and brass band devotee. His life for the last 60 years has been profoundly influenced by brass band music. He, in turn, has influenced it. The superhuman level of determination, dedication and devotion, which he is noted for has enriched the lives of people, young and old. During these six decades he played trombone, taught students and conducted the Salisbury Band for twenty seven and a half years, never waning in his quest for excellence. Ken will also be remembered for his contribution to the Community. He is a Life Member of the Salisbury Football Club and was one of the five original founding members of the Central Districts Football Club. On behalf of the Banding community of South Australia, I extend our sincere condolences to Ken’s family and friends. We will miss you mate, rest in peace good friend. Passing of Mr. Raymond Powell

| One of our South Australia’s Banding treasures and a valued Life Member of Whyalla Community Brass, Mr. Raymond Powell has recently passed away aged 102! Ray has been a faithful brass musician since his early days in the United Kingdom, where he played for The Salvation Army. On immigrating to Australia, Ray has played for the Whyalla Citizens Band, and the local Salvo band for many years. When both these ceased operating, Ray immediately took up service with Whyalla Community Brass. He has been heavily involved in community service here in Whyalla namely with brass bands, Buff Lodge and St John Ambulance. Rays happy disposition and bouts of spontaneously bursting into song will be very much missed by all who knew him. The Whyalla Community Brass will perform at a Funeral Service which will take place in the Presebyterian Church on Monday 22nd July commencing at11am. If there are bandies out there who would like to assist and play at Ray’s farewell please guess the purpose of this email is to provide opportunity for other bandies out there to assist if they are able with playing for Rays funeral service, please contact: The Secretary Joel Langridge on (08) 8631-9916 or mobile on; 0450-287-664. The music is simple hymn tunes, which can also be played by Alto Sax, Clarinet or flute if necessary. The Committee are happy to assist musicians with transport costs and accommodation if necessary. As most of the hymn music is written for Treble Clef, this would be the case for trombone, but they are transposing up to the clock for Bass/Tuba. Passing of Ernest (Ernie) Alderslade OAM

| The South Australian Band Association is saddened to learn of the passing of one of the true South Australian Music Legends. Ernest Harry Alderslade OAM (Ernie) has left a wonderful legacy. “Ernie” started his musical life in 1944 at the age of seven with the famous Malvern Municipal Band learning baritone. During the next 13 years he played tuba, euphonium and trombone in the Eagle Hawk Citizen’s Band, the Preston Municipal band, the Mildura District band and the Tanunda Town band. In 1957 he joined the band of the South Australia Police as a trombonist. During his service he also played euphonium, acted as Deputy Bandmaster and was appointed Musical Director in 1969, the position he held until retiring in 1990 because of ill health. Whilst in the Tanunda Town Band he won the trombone section in the Australian National Solo Competitions. He has adjudicated at many band and solo competitions both at State and National levels and was presented with the Award of Merit for Services to the Bands of South Australia in 1977. In 1988 Ernie was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to Band Music. Ernie was a devoted family man and a Gentleman to all who knew him. 2022 State Band Championships - Adjudicators

The South Australian Band Association is pleased to announce the Adjudicators for the 2022 State Band Championships, which will be held in Tanunda this Sunday. We look forward to a wonderful day with great music and great comradery. Brass Band Adjudicator Ian Denbigh Ian is a 4th generation trombone player that grew up in a brass band family. His father, David was a driving force behind the evolution of the Elizabeth Brass Band in the late 1970's where Ian began playing under British Banding legend, Bernard Bygrave. When Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (ASO) principal trumpet, Glenn Madden became musical director of the Band he encouraged Ian to take lessons from newly appointed principal trombone, Howard Parkinson. In 1982 Ian began studying at the South Australian College of Advanced Education under Robert Hower & in 1984 was selected as Principal Trombone on the Australian Youth Orchestra's inaugural European tour. During this period, Ian worked regularly as a casual with the ASO & was principal trombone with the State Opera orchestra. In 1985 Ian won the position of second trombone with State Orchestra of Victoria in which he performed Operas & Ballets all over Australia. In 1987 Ian won his present position as second trombone with the ASO where he has performed not only trombone, but Euphonium and Bass trumpet. In his years in Adelaide, Ian has taught trombone & euphonium at the Adelaide University & at many independent schools. Ian still retains the love of Brass Bands that was 1st ignited sitting next to the great Harry Mortimer as an 11 year old at the Belle Vue championship listening to 26 bands play Gilbert Vinter's "James Cook, circumnavigator"! He feels privileged to be asked to listen to all the bands today! Concert Band Adjudicator Dr Richard Mason Dr Richard Mason is an accomplished and versatile artist who has performed professionally throughout Australia, Asia, Europe and the United Kingdom. This experience encompasses orchestral and chamber music; Australian Defence Force bands; recording for radio, television and films; and performances in major international festivals. Richard has premiered numerous works by some of Australia’s leading composers. In 2016, Richard joined the Australian Regular Army after a period in the part-time forces and is currently the Music Director and Second-in-Command of the Australian Army Band-Adelaide. Richard is highly committed to educating and developing musicians and has spent over two decades concurrently teaching in the Australian tertiary and secondary education sectors. These roles have included positions at the University of Melbourne, the Victorian College of the Arts, Xavier College, and the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School. Richard’s qualifications include; a Master’s Degree in clarinet and bass clarinet from the Victorian College of the Arts; a PhD, and postgraduate qualifications from the University of Melbourne; and study in Amsterdam funded by the Erasmus Foundation. |
Passing of Gordon Kramm

The South Australian Band Association is saddened to learn of the passing of our dear friend and colleague Gordon Stanley Kramm who passed away yesterday (Monday 30 May).
Our deepest sympathies to Gordon's son David Kramm, his family, friends and the wider band community. Gordon was 93 years old and spent 87 of those years playing in bands and was awarded the SABA Fellowship award in 2016. He was an outstanding cornet player, a true gentleman & a massive contributor to South Australian banding His support for young musicians was highly valued & appreciated. Gordon will be missed by so many of us within the SA banding community. Rest in peace dear friend. Passing of Jim Dempsey

On behalf of the banding movement of South Australia it is with great sadness that I advise that our great friend James Dempsey passed away suddenly on Sunday night. “Jim” has been a stalwart of the brass band movement in South Australia since moving from Queensland some 40 years ago.
He was a valued member of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, recently retiring. Jim was recently presented with the South Australian Band Association’s most prestigious Fellowship Award for Outstanding Service to the band movement. He was a brilliant musician, trumpet player, conductor and teacher and has left a great legacy of dedication and commitment to brass playing. As a Scotsman of course he had a brilliant sense of humour and together with his musical ability he will be greatly missed in many a band room around Australia. The South Australian Band Championships will be held on Sunday 28 August 2022 in the beautiful historic Barossa township of Tanunda. Details on the venue, schedule and adjudicators will be released as information is confirmed. Please keep this date in your diaries as this will be an exciting return to contesting for our South Australian bands and we hope to make this a great event for all bands!
The Music Advisory Board will be deciding shortly the music selections for the event, particularly whether there will be a test piece or an own choice major work and the other required pieces for the contest. |

POSTPONED - World Class Brass with Peter Moore

Dear Band Colleagues Peter Moore, the great young trombonist and friend to SA, was being brought to Australia by a music performance group in Melbourne and Yamaha. After giving recitals there he was coming to spend time with us and feature at our World Class Brass Concert. The Melbourne people have told Peter they are cancelling his visit because of the virus situation. Peter, and we, are hugely disappointed that he is unable now to be with us later this month. However, we are only postponing the SABA World Class Brass concert. We hope to stage this, or a similar concert with Peter, later in the year as and when the virus emergency is over. Thank you to all those bands and bands-people who were keen to make the concert a great event and have been rehearsing for the massed band performance at the concert. Thank you to all those who have been arranging the event and particularly all those who have been publicising it for us. We look forward to you joining us at a Concert with Peter at some point later. Australia Day Award Winners

Congratulations to two of our SABA bands who were were recipients of 2020 Australia Day Awards.
Mitcham City Brass was awarded the City of Mitcham's Australia Day Community Event of the Year Award for their Mitcham Band Festival 2019 held at the Vogue Theatre. 
The Glenelg Brass Band was awarded the City of Holdfast Bay Australia Day Community Event of the Year Award. The band, which turns 135 this year, has performed four free concerts a year for the past 25 years, bringing the community together and providing wonderful entertainment. They also perform annually at the Glenelg Pageant, Proclamation Day and Australia Day.

Anyone with a connection to Mitcham City Brass knows just how much the Flinders Foundation, particularly their work around Kidney/Renal Research means to everyone in the band.

2018 SABA State Championships

The SABA is pleased to announce that this year’s State Band & Solo Championships will be held at Brighton Secondary School. Brighton is a specialist music school and has outstanding facilities. They are very keen to host our event as they see it as an excellent way to showcase their facilities and it is likely they will even participate in the competition. Based on feedback from the SABA Delegates we are holding the stage competition and solos on separate weekends so that solo performers can properly devote time to their performances without compromising their work with their bands. Band Championships – Sunday 19th August, Brighton Secondary School This year the stage competition is on Sunday the 19th of August. We intend for the Concert Bands and Brass Bands to perform consecutively with Concert Bands starting on stage at 9am and performances continuing in on venue all day until the Brass Bands conclude in early evening. This arrangement will eradicate most of the scheduling problems that occurred in 2017 with many players performing with both a concert and brass band. Solo & Party Competition – Saturday 1st September, Brighton Secondary School The solo competition will be held on Saturday 1st September at Brighton Secondary School and will be in a very similar format to last year. State Marching Championships – Sunday 9th September, Adelaide Showgrounds Wayville In a major development, and again based on feedback from the Delegates which urged that the Marching Championship should be held in a public space and be a public spectacle, we are pleased to announce that the Marching championship will be held on Sunday 9th of September at the Wayville Showgrounds on the last day of the 2018 Royal Show. Very public indeed. We urge that all bands plan now to support the 2018 marching competition and help make it the spectacle that it deserves to be. Even bands who are not competing in the Band Championships are encouraged to participate. It has not yet been decided if this event will be mandatory for Brass Bands competing in the State Band Championships. We are hoping that all bands will choose to participate in any case with a focus on the Parade Of Bands. The official “Contest Pack” is expected to go out to all bands in mid May. Please feel free to express your interest by return email at any time to assist in our planning. Your Contest Sub Committee is comprised of the same members as in 2017 and they are looking forward to running what should be a great championship. Following on from three successful tours, the Riverland in 2015, Yorke
Peninsula in 2016 and this year’s tour of the Limestone Coast, the 2018 State Youth Brass Tour will be heading to Clare Valley for what promises to be the best tour yet! We are staying at Bungaree Station where we will rehearse for three days followed by three days of concerts at different venues including Sevenhill Cellars, Mintaro Maze, Martindale Hall and St Michael’s Church. Our final concert will be back at Bungaree Station. ACCOMMODATION, CATERING & TRANSPORT We will be ’camping’ in the Shearers Quarters, so bring your swags or a sleeping bag and camp bed! We will have some down time during each day so you can relax and catch up with old friends and make new ones and there is a pool at Bungaree so bring your swimmers. You will need to bring a packed lunch on Day 1 but all other meals will be catered. Getting to Clare Valley is your responsibility and it is possible to car-pool so please let us know if you would like help with transport. Once there we will be travelling by coach to the concert venues.
ELIGIBILITY To be eligible you will need to be 24 years or under on the first day of camp which is 16th January 2018. The minimum playing standard will need to be approximately Grade Four (AMEB, ANZCA, TRINITY etc.) but you don’t need to have actually done an exam, you just need a teacher or your conductor to verify your playing standard. Applicants are also encouraged to indicate any conducting experience for consideration as co-conductors. INSTRUMENTATION Brass band instrumentation is preferred, however all brass will be accepted. French horns will be required to transpose from E-flat. Trombones, tubas, euphoniums and baritones will be reading treble clef. Percussionists should be able to read music. PERSONNEL Supervisory staff all have the relevant Working with Children and First Aid as required for teaching in South Australia. FEES The aim is to keep the cost as low as possible so fundraising and sponsorship is still being sought. A deposit of $50 will be invoiced on acceptance of your application. The camp, tour and shirt will be a maximum of $250 per person (to be confirmed). |
Mitcham Band Festival

Mitcham’s former Vogue Theatre will come alive with the ‘sounds of music’ on Saturday 24 June 2017 where fourteen of Adelaide’s finest community Brass and Concert Bands will take to the stage in an epic musical extravaganza! The Festival is a fun opportunity for each of the bands to showcase their favourite arrangements in a 45 minute program without the confines of traditional competition rules, however each band has been requested to include a Hymn and a March in their repertoire. After performing in numerous festivals over the years at country venues, Mitcham City Brass is excited to bring the Festival concept to the City, and is already planning for this to become an annual event. Entertainment commences at 9:00 am (doors open at 8:30 am) and continues until approximately 10:00 pm, and patrons are invited to join us for all or any part of the day. Participating Bands include: Burnside Youth Concert Band; Campbelltown City Band; City Of Adelaide Concert Band; Enfield Brass; Glenelg Brass Band; Henley and Grange West Torrens Concert Band; Holdfast Bay Concert Band; Para Hills Brass Band; Payneham City Concert Band; Salisbury City Band; Second Wind Ensemble; Unley Concert Band, Warriparinga Brass and of course the host band, Mitcham City Brass. The Elder Conservatorium of Music is now offering placements for all Brass Band Instruments in its Classical Performance course. The Bachelor of Music is a full-time three year degree. Classical Performance is one of the specialisations available within the Bachelor of Music. The Bachelor of Music provides intensive professional training. It seeks to provide a challenging and stimulating learning environment in which all students may achieve their full potential in their chosen specialisation. It aims to develop educated, flexible and imaginative graduates who possess the knowledge and skills required to function effectively in a wide range of contexts. Successful applicants will receive one to one instrumental tuition from specialist Conservatorium staff. Students take part in large and small ensemble activities. As well as core studies in theory and history, there are a number of electives that can be taken. Of special interest to brass band instrumentalists, is a course directly related to brass band conducting, score reading and interpretation. On this special time of ANZAC commemoration & remembrance, Whyalla Community Brass is asking for help from SA band members who may be able to assist our small band out on ANZAC Day, for services on the 25th of April. As you may know, there is a sense of gloom & uncertainty over our community. If you can help play for the service hymns, it would mean so much. We are willing to help with the costs of getting you here & also accommodation - if required. There is no marching involved, & we play for the Dawn Service/main service hymns. Passing of Frank Zanol - Mt Gambier City Band

The Band received the sad news today of the death of Frank Zanol. He passed away at 1:00 p.m. this afternoon at Mount Gambier Hospital. For those who might not have personally known Frank, he was a Life Member of the Band and kept in touch with current activities, having last attended a band function at the Hall 50th Anniversary Concert in August. The Band will be in touch with Jean and we'll advise Band Members and Friends on any role the Band might have in funeral arrangements.

Rotunda brings to life in a haunting snapshot of our history, the world of the band rotunda - an iconic symbol of early 20th century community, where troops were farewelled with pride and welcomed home in grieving. This extraordinary performance will celebrate and commemorate the ANZAC spirit and explore themes of loyalty, suffering, kinship and ultimately a desire for peace. More than 400,000 Australians enlisted for service in The Great War, representing almost 40 per cent of the total male population. The Australian casualty rate was the highest of the conflict. The Rotunda performance draws from the extraordinary courage and indomitable spirit of these ANZAC men, and the women who set about running the country with aching hearts and dread that their men might not return. This spirited performance combines an earthy, free-flowing mix of styles and highly physical contemporary dance with an unmistakably New Zealand style of choreography. Renowned for its rhythm and expression, ROTUNDA also integrates a fusion of Maori tradition with the traditional dynamic of brass band salutes which were integral to the seeing off and welcoming home of troops at war. New Zealand Dance Company focuses on delivering the highest quality performing arts by integrating choreographic forms, storytelling, diverse musical styles and theatrical invention. Mr Aubrey Gannon, conductor of Para Hills Band, will be retiring at the end of July 2015 at the age of 87. He has kept the band together for the last 26 years with orchestrating, conducting, competing and performing. Music has been his life and he will remain a dedicated member of the band. This year's competition will be held on Sunday 3rd May at the Youth Enterprise Centre, 17-19 Wiltshire St. Salisbury. Entries are to be sent in by Tuesday 14th April. Salisbury Slow Melody Competition offers a chance to perform for an appreciative audience at any playing any level of ability. Congratulations to Veronica Boulton of Marion City Band and Warriparinga Brass for being awarded the latest SABA Award Of Merit. SABA President, Dr Bronwyn Dolman, travelled to Camp Kedron at Barmera and presented the award to Veronica at the final performance of the South Australian Youth Brass Camp and Tour.

A BIT ABOUT VERONICA Veronica was born and brought up in Victoria where she began studying the piano at the age of five but her first public performance as a musician was at the age of seven, when she appeared in an Eisteddfod as a vocalist. At the age of nine Veronica joined the Traralgon City Brass Band (VIC) as a learner and played with them throughout her youth. She also played and toured with the Victorian State Youth Band. Over the ensuing years, Veronica played with Preston, Kew and Hawthorn ‘A’ Grade Bands. She also conducted Heidelberg Youth Brass and was MD of Morwell Citizens Band. In 1995 Veronica played with the inaugural Australian Brass Band. Veronica moved with her family to South Australia in 1996 where she resumed playing, initially on French horn,in the inaugural performance of the then newly formed Unley Concert Band. After a little over a year playing with the Unley Concert Band, Veronica moved back into brass bands and began playing with K&N Spring Gully Brass. It was whilst playing there that, Veronica initiated the creation of the K&N Youth band. From an initial existing small group of five or six young learners and inexperienced players Veronica recruited, developed, and conducted that Youth band. Veronica’s dedication and enthusiasm, combined with her musical and motivational skills, developed K&N Youth into what became the premier Junior Brass Band in South Australia. With the help of a number of parents and helpers, in the year 2000 Veronica took the band to the National Band Competition held in Geelong where they won the Junior ‘C’ Grade Competition. Between 2001 and the end of 2010 Veronica taught music at various schools, mainly in Adelaide’s southern suburbs. Without exception she was responsible for enhancing the relevant school’s music programs often introducing a brass instrument element. In two instances (St Peters Woodlands and Woodend Primary) Veronica again initiated and formed school bands. Inevitably, at all the schools where she taught, there were music students who were recruited or ‘steered’ towards either her own or other local community brass or concert bands in addition to their school performances. Over the ensuing years and even to the present time, many of those school students and current band members received music related scholarships (most with references from Veronica) and are now undertaking music studies as a major subject in their senior school years. Throughout 2004 Veronica taught and conducted the Hahndorf Town Junior Band. It was in June that year that Veronica was appointed MD of the Marion City Band. Not wishing to let down the Hahndorf band she began her role as new MD at Marion and continued to conduct and teach Hahndorf Juniors until the end of that year. In June 2004 at the time of her appointment as Musical Director of Marion City Band, Marion was a relatively small band competing in ‘D’ Grade. The growth, development and improvement Veronica has made to the band since her appointment has been phenomenal.Veronica’s personal drive, enthusiasm, energy, commitment and dedication to effect that change, has been nothing less than exceptional. Veronica immediately had the senior band competing in ‘C’ Grade and after winning two National 'C' Grade Championships the band now competes in 'B' Grade. She instigated and taught in a training program for juniors and adult learners. She recruited from schools and the general community. She encouraged, supported, and cajoled players and ‘would be’ players into becoming involved in banding and soon after her appointment she was able to form a Junior Band (Warriparinga Youth). That Junior band competed in and won the Junior ‘C’ Grade competition at the 2010 National Band Championship in Tasmania and in SA in 2011. The Band has since been re-graded in SA to Junior ‘B’ Grade. Warriparinga Brass now competes as an open 'D' grade band allowing young and adult beginners the opportunity to perform on the competition stage. In 2014 Veronica started Heaven Brass as a training program for Marion City Band and gives members the opportunity to learn new instruments and conduct. Under Veronica’s direction, leadership and inspiration, Marion City Band, as an organisation has grown enormously. From that relatively small beginning, the Marion City Band organisation now has in excess of 100 registered players performing in three different competing bands and a training band. Veronica is currently sits on the SABA Executive and has been active in the facilitation of the State Band Championships. Veronica has been the driving force behind the 2015 SABA State Youth Brass Camp and Tour which has brought players from across the state together to perform throughout the Riverland. The success of this venture is testament to the passion and drive that Veronica has towards the SA Band Movement. There is no doubt whatsoever that Veronica has an enduring influence on performers and performances, particularly in Junior Banding in South Australia and as a consequence, the band movement generally in South Australia. |
Youth Brass Storms the Riverland

 The South Australian State Youth Brass Camp and Tour 2015 has sucessfully blasted its way through the riverland. Under the skillful leadership of Jim Dempsey, 34 members of bands from South Australia came together to form a brass band at Camp Kedron, Barmera. After three days of intensive rehearsal (swimming, board games, cards, a quiz night and plenty of food) the SA State Youth Brass performed 9 concerts over three days. The band travelled to Loxton, Berri, Barmera, Renmark and Wilkadene with the blue tuba in tow and performed a variety of music spanning over 400 years from The Renaissance to a composition recently written for the ensemble by local composer, Dr Mark C. Smith called 'Land of the Blue Tuba'. Some keen players were even given the opportunity to perform as featured soloists and conduct the ensemble. A final concert back at the campsite for friends and family included a special presentation of a SABA Award of Merit to organisor/ promoter and bus driver, Veronica Boulton. Mark C. Smith attended this concert to hear his new comosition that had been performed all throughout the Riverland. A huge thank you goes to Veronica Boulton, Jen Shinnick, Alexandra Bowman, Jim Dempsey, Mary Westley, George Burton, Roy Pettifer, BJ O'Donovan and Dr Mark C. Smith for all your efforts in making this initiative such a success. Thank you to Riverland Brass for your hospitality and use of equipment. Also thanks go to the participants who performed and behaved so well, representing Holdfast Bay Concert Band, Hahndorf Town Band, Marion City Band, Playford Concert Band, Warriparinga Brass, Riverland Brass, Mitcham City Brass, Tanunda Town Band and The South Australian Band Assiociation. Land of The Blue Tuba

 A new composition called 'Land of the Blue Tuba' has been written by local composer, Mark C Smith, to be featured in the program for the upcoming SA State Youth Brass Camp and Tour through the Riverland of South Australia. Here are a few words from the composer about this new work: "This work is a playful exploration of the traditional tune “Bound for South Australia”- an English song that has it’s origins on the docks of the Thames in London. The work also incorporates the “Song of Australia” written by German born South Australian composer Carl Linger. “Song of Australia” was one of four works considered as Australian National Anthem in the 1977 Anthem referendum. The “Blue Tuba” is a direct reference to the innovative fundraising campaign to finance the 2015 Youth Brass Band camp." A bit about the composer: Dr Mark C Smith has a long-standing connection with the South Australian Band Association. He has been a member of various SA bands for the last 28 years as a performing member and Conductor, and is currently a member of SABA’s Music Advisory Board. Mark is prolific in his output of band music, with works played in concerts and contests by orchestras and bands Australia wide. He is a professional writer and was responsible for producing works for the Adelaide Carols by Candlelight for Fourteen years. As a performer, Mark has had tremendous success in solo competitions. He has won Six National solo prizes on Trumpet and Flugelhorn, and is the current SA champion on the latter (for the ninth consecutive year). Mark works as Director of Music at the Star of the Sea School – one of SA’s largest Primary School music programs. He was awarded a PhD in Music Composition for his 2012 Thesis “Casting Brass” which explored the influence of the banding movement upon orchestral music. |

An entertaining program of fun songs from Jaws to Gounod, The Typewriter to The Tit Larks wowed the audience with special guest vocal performers and solos by band members. PCCB Seeks New Musical Director

Position Vacant - Music Director Payneham City Concert Band is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic musician to join the ranks of the Band in the role of Music Director to lead and develop its 40+ members of varying ages and experience. The Band has a proud history of music making beginning life more than 60 years ago as the Murray Park Band (a brass band), later becoming the St. Peters Municipal Band and in 1966 a concert band – the only one in South Australia at that time. The band moved to Payneham in 1988 under the sponsorship of Payneham City Council and it continues to receive the support of the now combined City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters Council. The Band rehearses on Tuesday nights, from 7:30 till 9:30pm, at the Payneham Senior Citizens Hall, 54 Coorara Ave, Payneham. We currently perform 10-12 times a year (including 4 community concerts, ANZAC March and Norwood Pageant, our annual Reflections Concert, Strathabyn Band Festival and the Long Tan Memorial as well as other once off performances). We are keen to expand our performing calendar. The primary role of the Music Director is to attend and direct musical rehearsals, select music, conduct performances and concerts, assess the musical ability of playing Members and arrange positions within the Band as they deem appropriate for the capabilities of the Member and the needs of the Band, with the agreement of the Member in question. The SABA State Youth Camp and Tour has a total of 32 participants, representing Marion, Mitcham, Tanunda, Riverland, Salisbury, Warriparinga & Hahndorf bands. Information regarding what participants need to do now has been emailed to applicants. If you're feeling disappointed that you didn't get your application in on time and you'd really like to participate, don't despair - late applications are able to be received over the weekend with a deadline of close of business Monday 10th November - as this is when the order for shirts needs to be placed! Christmas Season Marches Off

 Time to dust off the Sousaphones, find that pesky lyre that's somewhere at home and get ready to for the Christmas earworms that everyone will be humming. The Credit Union Christmas Pageant heralds the start of the Christmas season for most bands around the State. Christmas time is a busy seasond for many of South Australian bands as they can provide wholesome entertainment for appreciative crowds and earn some extra money. Christmas Pageants are a long standing tradition in South Australia and the Credit Union Christmas Pageant has a healthy representation from many of our brass and concert bands and although it is only a couple of hours on a Saturday there are a few tips to remember when participating:
There are many other Pageants around the state that bands are involved in every year. Many of them welcome dressing up and any other enertaining flair you can bring to the street. Mount Gambier Pageant sports a healthy contigency of Victorian and South Australian Bands because they have partenered up with the Blue Lake Brass Band Festival and offer cash prizes to the best dressed and most entertaining bands. Mount Barker Pageant winds its way through the suburban landscape with all sorts of musical entertainment and cleverly constructed floats. Glenelg and Onkaparinga Pageant tempt you towards the cool ocean where you hope your lyre can handle the sea breeze. Norwood is gently up hill the whole way - fortunately there are enough watering holes at the end. This is a busy time of year for many bands - have fun and give South Australia a good representation of what the band community has to offer. |
Exposing Adelaide's Brass Knockers

 Inspired by our friend and her commitment to getting the word out regarding breast cancer awareness, the K&N Brass Band are organising a concert in support of the McGrath Foundation entitled “Dreaming of a Pink Christmas”, to be held in Adelaide on the afternoon of Sunday 7th December 2014, from 2pm. Although the event is being organised by K&N, the band performing will be no ordinary brass band: “South Australian Brass Knockers” is SA’s first all-female band, formed specifically for this event, with ladies from a number of South Australian bands donating their time and talent to this worthy cause. The venue for the concert will be the Grainger Studio (home of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra), Hindley Street, Adelaide. In June 2014 Vivienne Little, Kensington & Norwood Brass Band Committee Member, concert compere and wife of one of our players, was diagnosed with breast cancer at only 46 years of age. After a left mastectomy and further testing, the long-term prognosis is very positive; although some years of hormone therapy and monitoring are necessary, there is no immediate requirement for radio- or chemotherapy. There is no doubt that the early detection of the cancer has played a vital role in such an encouraging outcome.  |
James Morrison Music Academy

A message from Allen Woodham OAM: Huge announcement today that Mount Gambier is to be the home of the James Morrison music academy. This will be a three years university course through the University of South Australia based in Mount Gambier. Commencing 2015 and gradually expanded to enroll 200 selected students. James Morrison to live in Mount Gambier. Came along to the city band rehearsal and sat in with his two sons playing cornet. Just amazing news for music development nationally. |

Passing of Les Dawson from Para Hills Band

Coast and Vines Music Club

 Coast & Vines Music Club is a boutique mini-concert band based on the Fleurieu Peninsula- south of Adelaide. It was established in May of 2006 by Sonia Radford to cater for adults and students who want to gain ensemble and personal skills on their instrument with a focus on playing at community events, fetes, celebrations and aged care facilities and cafes etc. Being a “club” means that a variety of ensembles can be developed as well as a usual concert band configuration. Also, things are all run without a formal committee and no subscription fees for membership are charged. Rather, a participation fee is charged to players when they attend. Rehearsals are most Friday nights 7:30-10pm at Woodend Primary School; Edwardbeck Dve/Young Street Sheidow Park. The session starts with simpler music which assists players with less experience and acts as a warm-up for the band. The music gets more difficult throughout the evening and a half-time supper break allows for refreshments and socializing. A $5 participation fee includes supper. It was pleasing to see band members participating in the massed march and rotunda events across the weekend. This was very well received and brought the event out into the public where it is seldom seen. Unfortunately a administrative error prompted a change in the final results that were announced on the day but this has been rectified with the bands involved. SABA supports all member bands from South Australia and aims to promote all banding events, competitions, concerts and fundraising initiatives. Keeping up to date with other bands is easy to do through email and online social networking. Gone are the days of newsletter mail outs, most band members and keen audiences are able to find out all the latest news on concerts, players and events from facebook, e-newsletters and websites. SABA has an active facebook page that facilitates a dialoge between bands, the associaton, memebers and friends. Over the last few years, facebook has been a vital resource for the National Band Championships and Australian state competitions as a way of communicating en masse on short notice. Many bands also have facebook pages that allow members to post photos of events, publish results and have topical conversations. 4 Bars Rest facebook page is a global discussion about brass banding, music and player requests, competition discussion and instrument sales. Concert Bands of Australia facebook group has facilitated valuable discussion on repertoire between conductors, composers and players. Whether you're an active member or just a 'lurker', It's easy to keep in the loop about common trends and band activities. e-newsletters are a fantastic tool for communicating directly to an audience and a great way of condensing a band's activities into a short, informative publication. Three local bands that regularly post e-newsletters are K&N, Marion and Tanunda Town Band. Any interested people are welome to sign up online. Mt Gambier Reflects on Vic States Performance

A reflection by Craig Wood, Mount Gambier City Band: While the Mount Gambier City Band was disappointed with its results in the C Grade Victorian Band Championships in Ballarat yesterday, the band's players and Musical Director Jarrod Harrison were not disappointed with their performance. In a tough competition held at the historic Her Majesty's Theatre, the band scored lower than expected in the performance of four pieces of music, including the test Piece: "Sinfonietta" by Gordon Langford. Eventual winners. the City of Traralgon band won the points tally and took the mantle of Victorian Champions from Darebin City Northern Brass who finished unplaced. The local band takes solace from the overwhelming number of supporters who contacted the band before and after the contest. For the first time, the brass championship performances were streamed on live video through the internet and the City bands' on stage showing was watched by many Mount Gambier residents and followers. Musical Director Jarrod Harrison, showing why he is considered in band circles as a most promising up and coming leader, took responsibility for the band's performance. He stated that the band had played as he had asked them, and had not left any thing out of the stage performance. In music competition it is always difficult to know the specific expectations of an adjudicator about a piece of music on a particular day. Getting each player to share the same expectations is also problematic. And unfortunately for the City band, it was a simple case of the interpretation and technique not being what the adjudicator, Sean Preist from Tasmania, was looking for on the day. Mr Harrison has now taken his charges to four band contests in two and a half years, and regardless of Sunday's results, the band has experienced significant growth and improvement over that time. With business as usual, the City band will continue rehearsing and combining contests with community service. Individual players will represent the city in the South Australian Solo Championships in September before the local Senior's Concert at the Band Hall in October. Keeping Social with Balls

 Being involved in community bands is more than just playing music. Band events promote a strong social environment so it's no surprise that band members do many different activities together. It would be difficult to find a band in South Australia that limits its social interaction to rehearsal times. Last Year SABA supported the Great Cycle Challenge which helped raise funds for child cancer research, this was a fantastic opportunity to raise money for a charity directly affecting South Australian band members and way which bandies can share other interests. A quick glance at facebook will reveal more photos and pre/post rehearsal meals and drinks than actual rehearsals! Marion City Band has a dedicated netball team called the CORNETballs (pictured) that compete every Sunday (lets hope they dont get into the grand final becuase its on the same weekend as the states). Fundraising events are a good way of bringing playing and non-playing band members together, movie nights, sporting events, City to Bay Fun Run, Bay to Birdwood, Cheesefest, vintage celebrations in the Barossa, family holidays just to name a few of the soial events that we see bandies enjoying every week. Mount Gambier ready to represent at Victorian States

With only one rehearsal left before they represent the city at the Victorian State Band Championships in Ballarat this weekend (August 16th & 17th), the Mount Gambier City Band is working feverishly on putting the finishing touches to their anticpated contest stage performance. The local band will be up against seven other bands in their division, including the current National and Victorian Champions; Darebin City - Northern Brass. With a strengthened cornet section since their very close second placing at the South Australian Band Championships last year, the band is in a good place to compete with their opposition, especially in the performance of the test piece. Gordon Langford's "Sinfonietta", by which all bands are measured against each other. Musical Director Jarrod Harrison has been rehearsing the band and various instrumental sections hard for the past two months.The City band also hopes to gain an edge in the points tally through the performance of their other three pieces, which includes a hymn, a stage march and a concert item. The local band's division is scheduled to start on Sunday morning. VOLUNTEERS needed

SABA are running a drill accreditation course on Saturday 16th August to get some of our drum majors nationally certified to be capable of adjudicating marching competitions. To do this, we have David Peters coming from Tasmania for the weekend. Part of the accreditation requires our drum majors to run drill with a band, so we are seeking between 12 - 20 people who have marched before to form up this band - no playing will be required. Our volunteers will meet at Mitcham band hall (corner Belair / Grange Roads, Lower Mitcham - opposite the Mitcham Council Offices) at 12.30pm for a BBQ lunch supplied by SABA before commencing the drill section of the accreditation at 1.30pm. Our volunteers will be needed for around 3 hours in total (but may be less). This is a great social opportunity to get to know members from other bands, and also to build the skills of some of our drum majors.
